Who is the woman with the kitchen...?

She is a sort of everywoman, possibly the impregnated servant for the household during the harsh reality of post ww1 germany. Flowers were used not as decoration, but to show and describe the functionality of the human body's organs. Heart of muscle done with tulips, white and grey matter with neuron activity utilizing Agapanthus. Pulminary activity hinted at with Kangaroo Paws. This woman is holding a cut plant(wilting) in her hand to attempt to show the objective reality of cut flowers--they wilt and die. New Objectivity (or Objectivism) or New Disspassion(Neue Sachlichkeit), was the Art and Literature movement of this time(Otto Dix, Bertold Brecht). The Frankfurt Kitchen was part of the corresponding architecture movement, Nues Bauen(New Building). Reconstructing, post ww1, designers believed that the world was at the start of a new era and that their work might transform life. Inspired by a desire to utilize technical advances in science and technology and a desire for social progress, Grete Lihotzky worked on this kitchen design that transformed the work of women and still is utilzed and holds up today.

The following is the entry from the Art In Bloom 2008 Booklet:
"180. Frankfurt Kitchen, Margatete Schütte-Lihotzky
Floral arrangement by Catherine DeVet
This arrangement is to accompany the actual kitchen;
therefore, I was inspired to try and create an actual
woman. I wanted a woman who utilized unpretentious
botanicals: willow, herb, grass, onion. Also, she needed
a "rational organization": her structure of tied and
organized branches and tied flowers. I am hoping
for a sort of Modernist machine-woman along the
lines of a (mannequin) dressform to highlight the
assembly line production used for building new design
objects that raised the quality of everyday life.
Art in Bloom participation: First Year."

The Woman - An Inside Look

In this video Catherine is commenting on the fact that her arrangement was moved from the original location. The arrangement was originally located between the tv screen and the openning to the kitchen. There was a party on opening night. Somebody must have bumped it so it was moved to the right of Kitchen.
